How I Work

How do I work?

To begin with, I offer confidentiality and a non-judgemental attitude within which I aim to ensure that my clients trust me, feel secure with me and feel understood by me.  Without the safety, which these elements provide, I do not believe very much can happen.  When one feels that their symptoms/thoughts/feelings/behaviours are understood and addressed, not only can much relief be felt, but it is only then that real insight can be gained.  Without insight, very little real and lasting change can take place. Finally, I work within strict guidelines for the profession ie I abide by the code of ethics and practice outlined by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.  I also attend supervision regularly to ensure good practice as well as undertaking regular professional development.  I have professional indemnity insurance.

ID-100196178What is the procedure?

After an initial conversation on the telephone, I offer prospective clients a consultation ie an hour-long stand-alone session in which I can get a better understanding of the client, the current issue and some background history in order to determine the best possible course of treatment.  This session also provides an opportunity for the client to ask any questions, raise concerns and generally get a sense of me and my way of working so that they can also decide whether they feel sufficiently comfortable and confident to work with me.

If we agree to proceed with therapy, for however long, practical details such as a regular day and time for the session will be arranged. Sessions last for 50 minutes.  Having a set day and time for these sessions is very important to give a sense of continuity to the process of therapy. For most people, having a regular time also gives a sense of security to the experience.  However, I understand that life sometimes gets in the way, so, with notice, I would always try to accommodate my clients with an alternative time.
